cant be arsed to type this all out again so heres an exerpt from my evaluation....

[EXERPT] In the last part of the brief I began considering what elements we covered in our argument and found that star constellations could make an interesting piece, visually and conceptually. I researched more into the different types of constellations and found ones that could relate to certain points in our argument, such as the ‘hunter’ being featured in the more heated part of the piece and ‘Columbus’ within the part where we discuss the crash of the Columbian space craft. I also utilized the first and last constellations to be discovered as beginning and ending points in the piece of design. My first design worked unsuccessfully because it didn’t portray the idea of ‘reaching for the stars’ and the escalation of our argument. It seemed to cramped in the corner (see example on A3 card no.5) and didn’t show my argument as strong as it could do. I decided to research more into space exploration, in particular the possibilities of us actually ever being able to colonise another planet. During this research I found some information on a scientist named Frank Drake Dr. He is known for formulating the Drake Equation (N= [Rs nh fl fi fc L]) in scientific terms this meant everything, in design terms, nothing. Therefore I looked into what each symbol stood for, for example nh is about the amount of water and minerals on the desired planet, therefore I simplified this down to Earths Resource. By applying this concept to the entire equation, I found that I could start editing and sectioning parts of our argument to fit with the different ‘topics’. The first design I came up with consisted of 6 horizontal tiles representing the equation. The quotes that I found to strengthen my argument worked as a ray of light ‘bulldozing’ through my partners argument. After analysis though I realised the layout of the tiles was weak and still did not portray my argument as reach for the stars and branching outwards.

Therefore I reviewed both the design and layout of the entire piece and created a staggered inclining effect which still allowed the quotes and constellations to hold there meaning. I changed the type to fit with the idea of molecules and atoms making up the rays of light and replaced the lines of the constellations with the same type to create more white space and strengthen the constellations. I added the opacity effect to much of the quotes, to create the idea of the light ray aging as it travels towards earth, the concept of what light we are seeing is 100s of year old from travel. I added colour to simulate the idea of tiny galaxies around the planets, which were punctuation. These galaxies became denser as the tiles increased upwards as further into space the density of the stars is greater and nearer to earth we see less. I feel that mine and my partner’s Hayley Warren, projects combined they work effectively against each other in argument and with each other in design making this project I feel, a visual and conceptual success.

I love the fragility of this piece, it almost reminds me of an insect. Great title too.
